A Leveling
66 x 30” ‡‡ Crosscut Saw / Wood / Paint / Aluminum / Steel / Neodymium Magnets
While it is often tempting to imagine otherwise, life rarely provides a smooth ride. “A Leveling,” looks to the bumpier times: days clouded by misgivings and doubt, when the obstacles seem insurmountable and the path forward is hidden beyond the horizon. For Curran, these are the broken days, ones where we feel weak and fractured to the point of disassembly, when we wish we could crumble but must instead present as even and whole, for the world does not wait on the broken. Like the wood segments clinging to the image of the tree behind them, we look to the best version of ourselves — who we have been and who we hope to be — to ground ourselves and find the strength to keep us from falling. To Curran, the piece is a reminder of the way through the darkness, and an affirmation of the strength that remains within us even when we struggle to see it.
