Opportunity comes when it’s least expected — a fact Curran knows all too well. However, he argues in “Red Bird,” perhaps the fault lies less with the opportunity than with the expectation. The piece, part of the artist’s “Windows” series, sees him reflecting upon this dynamic and the ways it can help or hinder our pursuit of the things we want. Looked at one way, the bird appears caged atop its branch, lost amongst the foliage, contrail floating behind as a reminder of aspirations that will forever remain out of its grasp. But look through a different lens and the tenor changes: now we look out upon a figure sitting at the ready, awaiting the right moment to spread its wings and blaze its own path across the beckoning sky. For the bird knows, as Curran does, that opportunity is always on its way, ready to be seized by those who stay ready for its arrival.
